What are some recommendation(s) for the "best" headset to get for this course?  Is there a headset out there which is considered both the best for this course and the best for a currently certified and actively working medical transcriptionist?

Transcription Gear sells some good ones ($35 and up maybe?).  It's been a while since I had to get a new one.  I like the one that has the volume control on the cord (falls around the chest area - my favorite one).  I have also had success using regular inexpensive ear buds.  The Koss brand has some pretty decent inexpensive ones.  I've been a MT for around 20 years and am actively working, and those are the ones that I have experience with.

I've tried a lot of different ones. Right now I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 202 headphones which I LOVE. They are very comfortable, the sound is pretty darned good which is amazing for the price (about $28 on Amazon). I'm on my second pair since the wires that attach to the ear pieces are somewhat fragile and can break after a while, but for that price, it's easy enough to replace them when they finally go. My ears are sensitive, so ear buds hurt my ears after a while and stethoscope-style headsets tend to make my ears hurt after a while too.

Oh yes, the stethoscope-style headsets are definitely not my favorite (hurt after a while).  I am glad you pointed that out.  Will have to try the Sennheiser brand someday.

I've been using a set of Bose noise cancelling headphones for the last few years. They aren't cheap but IMO are well worth the investment. I feel like I was missing things using the stethoscope type headsets.

I would think buying expensive headsets would be a deductible tax expense, correct?
