Can anyone tell me what guava is like or how to fix it?  I'm attempting to try out a new fruit or vegetable each week, and my local grocery store has a special on guava this week.

Hi Glenda,

I have memories of my mother preparing guava jam.  Also in a cobbler type dish...It stunk so bad I would never attempt to eat it, but it sure went fast at the church potlucks...hope this helps some...

Guava is a tropical fruit, with a pinkish red fleshy interior, and usually not too sweet. It makes for a very refreshing juice added to sweet coconut water, with ice. I applaud your adventurous spirit, Glenda. Please let us know what you think if you decide to try it.

Glenda, what a marvelous plan! I think it's great. I too have memories of guava, lol: My mother used to soak peeled, chopped guava fruit in water and sugar to make a very light and refreshing juice. This tasted good but even better was the papaya juice made the same way.

Thank you, ladies!  I think I'll give the juice ideas a try.  Do you strain the fruit out after it's soaked a while, and if so, can it be pureed and added to something like smoothies?

I'll admit, a cobbler sounds wonderful, but it would defeat some of the purpose of trying to eat healthier. :)

Anyone have other interesting or unusual fruits or veggies they would suggest?  One of my favorite warmer-weather dishes is a jicama and cucumber salad.  Slice them thin or shred them, and soak them in apple cider or champagne vinegar with a little salt and pepper.  Sometimes I'll add some ancho powder for a hint of heat.  It's best served cold, but it's good at room temperature as well, especially at cookouts.

As for prepping the juice I can't say I know as I've only ever had it prepped for me. The weather was so hot at the time, and I was so thirsty that I didn't ask how it was made, I was just thankful to drink it's deliciousness. The store bought canned guava juice is okay, certainly not as healthy though, nor refeshing. I like the smoothie idea, Glenda :) Hopefully another student will be able to answer your question about straining/soaking the fruit, as again I have no idea. I must say I'm enjoying seeing you in a whole new light. After knowing you only from E-mail exchanges and some phone-calls I never would have guessed we would be sharing a conversation on the guava fruit ! When it comes to cooking, I know what I like, I keep it simple, practical, flavorful. I love pasta, asparagus, could eat them everyday, and I pretty much do :) Raw Stinking Rose ! Ever chop some up into thin slices and garnish your food that way, sprinkling some THAI fish sauce on top as well instead of adding salt ? Besides using various spices that's about as exotic or adventurous as I get in the kitchen. :)
