I've been seeing quite a few job postings for HCC coding and most requiring the CRC credential through AAPC. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the job duties of this type of position. I'm intrigued and am looking into taking additional classes to possibly take the CRC exam. Any insights?

Hello Angie,
HCC coding is diagnosis coding only, so you are only using the ICD 10-cm book, which I'm sure you already know well. I am CRC certified, and would recommend either the study guide (I'm sure this would be enough), or an additional short course to learn the other risk adjustment specific details. My test was probably 2/3 coding questions and the rest on the other specifics to RA.
Don't be afraid to apply with the CPC-A that you already have - there are companies willing to train. :) There are a few challenges with this type of field though. The biggest is that its seasonal; when charts run out you may not have communication that there isn't more work, or communication at all. Also, I found that my work experience hasn't always been recognized because its not complete coding (diagnosis/procedure), BUT you will be introduced to numerous types of charts and not limited to only inpatient/outpatient/ED/etc. I've enjoyed RA coding overall, but it's important to understand the challenges as well.
