Does anyone here transcribe for the veterinary field?

I am almost done with Module IV, and I am also a Registered Veterinary Technician. I got to thinking maybe there was a way I could put both to use. Does anyone here transcribe for the veterinary field? I am curious to hear any input one might have on this subject. Thanks!

I don't remember any of our graduates doing veterinary transcription. However, there must be jobs that require all of those skills at veterinarian schools. I'm not sure many veterinarians dictate their reports. You would probably know more about that than I do.

You might check around the unversities and the bigger practices.  I never thought about it, but it's intriguing!

I'm an x-ray tech, but Texas A&M Vet School took wonderful care of 2 of my bloodhounds. I spent 3 years as a vet tech before I went to x-ray school. I thought that would be the best of both worlds, so after graduating from Andrews, I checked with A&M. They said the students are responsible for typing up the reports. I was so disappointed. If I were you, I'd contact all the vet schools in the country and as many Emergency Clinics as you can. I think those would be the places with enough volume that they just might contract out their transcription. Also, big cities have large specialty clinics, everything from cancer treatment to the same specialties as human medicine.. It'll take some time t o dig them up, but you might think about that. If you find any, I'd really appreciate an email to sn422@sbcglobal.net. Best of luck, Katie!!!

I had a friend who used to transcribe for a wild life park several years ago. I'm not sure what happened with that, but she is a teacher now. You might check into whether that's a possibility with any zoos or animal parks in your area. I would assume that places like Sea World have to document "patient" care somehow. Best wishes!

Sarah,

Thank you so much for your input. First stop is the vet school near me, and I will go from there. Time to do some investigating. :) I will definitely send you an email with my findings. Thanks for your encouragement!

Hi Katie - I did veterinary transcription many years ago! (Early 1980s).  I actually fell into it as I took a job as a secretary at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine.  I worked there for five years before moving into "human" medical transcription.  I can tell you that the types of transcription I did was primarily referral letters and articles for journals/publications related to veterinary medicine.  I think you will find this standard with most university-based veterinary schools.

In my 30+ years of medical transcription, I can tell you that I have seen advertisements for veterinary transcriptionists only once, and it was for a veterinary ophthalmologist specialty.   From what I understand, most vets still handwrite notes or use some of the voice recognition programs.  There may still be some out there that dictate their notes for typing - may just require a lot of research.  Good luck to you!!
