I was thinking, has anyone ever thought of using I.M.? What are your thoughts?

I'm wondering if the use of I.M. (Instant Messaging) has ever been considered? Imagine being able to contact your instructor during set hours. Instant Messaging, real-time online chat...

We have considered it in the past, but it just won't work for the way our program is set up. It also wouldn't work for a large number of our students who work full time or unusual hours.
