An "ICD-10 day" observation

An "ICD-10 day" observation

I am currently working as a transcriptionist while I study coding. I transcribe for several different doctors, but yesterday with the implementation of ICD-10 one of them (in orthopaedics) suddenly started dictating the ICD-10 codes along with his diagnoses.  It was kind of neat for me since I'm studying coding, but I am also kind of curious why he's doing that now.  I just thought it was kind of interesting to see!

I am a working transcriptionist too and have a doctor who adds the codes in when dictating some procedures.  it will be interesting to see if this stops or changes with ICD-10.  I find myself thinking of what I would code for the dictation as I'm typing now

Danielle, I do the exact same thing.  A couple of weeks ago I had a situation where one of our cardiothoracic surgeons dictated a note stating that he and the entire team were on-call for 4 hours while a child was undergoing cardiac catheterization just in cast a catastrophic event occurred.  I had never seen that before and I was wondering how that would have been coded.  Ironically while doing the Medicine section of Module II I ran across the code for being on-call.
